On Teaching Students & Teachers

Gary Abud, had an interesting path to becoming a teacher. He says that it started with an eye disease that required a cornea transplant at a young age, which led him to being interested in science and wanting to be a physician. It was only after having a “change of heart” that Abud realized that his true calling was teaching science, a calling that has led him–after less than a decade of teaching–to be named the 2013-2014 Michigan Teacher of the Year.

He is now a full-time instructional coach for his fellow teachers in the Grosse Pointe School District. He tells Sandra about his work teaching teachers.Abud talks with Sandra about how “technology is just another tool that teachers have at their disposal to help students learn,” mentioning that a chalkboard is just as much a technology as an iPad and it is really just about how any piece of technology is used.

He also mentions free tools and websites that exist to help students learn and do research like Instagrok which allows students to search but restricts itself to only educational sources.Beyond technology Abud also works closely with his fellow teachers in implementing project-based learning. He tells Sandra that project-based learning stems from the idea that in the real world people often have complex problems that they have to solve and that, “In classrooms we try to design a project that would require students to ask questions, to solve the problem, but that those questions are carefully tied to the standards in each content area that they are supposed to learn.”

This project-based learning method does require a large amount of collaboration between teachers, but Abud says that this actually strengthens ties between teachers because, “when we work together, we can actually be a stronger team.”
