When Kid President challenged us “be more awesome,” it wasn’t an empty phrase. For whatever reason, he seems moved to add his voice to the global conversation because he thinks it will make the world a better place. There are other young people out there in our schools who have equally inspiring messages to share; however, they are not always given the opportunity to share their message with others.
Because of this, my teaching partner Jonathan Byrne and I have been working to create an opportunity for young people to share their inspiring message with others. We are excited to present an event that will showcase the “Kid Presidents” in our schools. The GPNspire Talks will be hosted by Grosse Pointe North High School in collaboration with the Grosse Pointe Public School System, our Student Association, our Parents Club and the Galileo Consortium on Friday evening November 15th at 7pm in Grosse Pointe North’s Performing Arts Center.
The GPNspire Talks will feature a collection of 13 inspiring talks delivered live by the students who wrote them – students representing eight schools from around Metro Detroit. Modeled after TED Talks, and in the spirit of Kid President, the GPNspire Talks will give students the opportunity to inspire one another and their community. There are few rules for the talks; simply, they should be about five minutes in length and designed to inspire. Each speech has its own flavor and message, but they all share one thing: they inspire.
We hope that you will consider joining us Friday November 15th at 7pm to hear what these students have to say. We also hope you will encourage your students to do the same. Students are encouraged to wear their school spirit to the event.
Tickets for the event are available online on the event website. Simply click on the “Buy Tickets” link in the upper left-hand corner of the page. Tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets are $10 each. All ticket sales and proceeds will benefit two inspiring Metro Detroit charities, Kids Without Cancer and Make a Wish Michigan.
